[Vwdiesel] Tie Rod Replacement

Hi all-

The diesel cabby needs new tie rod assys, which I've
got on hand.

What I'm wondering is if it is possible to unscrew
them from the rack and install new with the rack
installed on the car?  Bentley says the rack has to be
removed and put in a padded vice to do it.  It appears
that the only reason rack removal is required is to
hold it in the vice, so I'm wondering if maybe a set
of padded vice grips would do the same job?

Anyone have any ideas on how I could make this easier?
 Should be exactly the same as a Rabbit with power
steering.
