I just replaced my first vw diesel head gasket this month. I guess I
did good because it runs great. took my time and it took about 4
hours to take apart and more like 8 to assemble. followed the
bentley. had head surfaced for $45, they said it was out .008". I am
using the same valve cover gasket as it was in tact and it isn't
leaking, i will put a new one on after i retorque in 1000 miles. i
also replaced the front seals and timing belt. I put the same knotch
gasket. I replaced the head bolts as they are stretch type, cost
about $30 for set. I am new at this so don't bank on me, there is
much better advice on this group. good luck and glad you are reviving
the rabbit.
