I've used both, in both Jettas and Vanagons, and while Amsoil is ok (about the same as other
synth oils for shifting feel), the Redline is the best for shifting feel in all temperature
conditions. I had the top line Amsoil in my Westy, and the cold weather shifting was far worse
than Redline MT90. I still have Amsoil (not the same stuff, don't recall the Amsoil name, but
it's the right stuff for fwd) in my current Jetta, and same story there. I will switch back to MTL
in the Jetta when I get a chance. My last Jetta trans had nearly 500k using Redline and still
shifted great. Redline can be had for $7/qt US, or $9.50 CDN if you hunt around.
