A little pricier, but have you considered maybe importing a Euro TDI in 
either the 5 or 6 cylinder formats? Inline 5 and V6, I believe. They'd 
certainly have plenty of power and economy, and probably wouldn't  be 
heavier than a 40's cast-iron block/head Inline 6...
