  Let's not forget that a diesel does NOT want any backpressure.  
That's a gasser thing to keep air/fuel misture from coming out 
the exhaust valve during overlap.  No air/fuel mix so no fuel 
loss.  You could loose a dab of cylinder filling IF there's enough 
overlap but the extra exhaust out of there would probably outweigh 
any minimal loss of fresh air.  WIth a TD it'd be unlikely to make any 
difference at all and a vacuum would be even better!.
