Please don't think I am crazy, but the engine I would use is the 4.3 litre V6 from a J-body GM. This was the 5.7 cut down to 6 cylinders, and like all later 5.7s was a really good engine. They are not exactly common, but if you can find one, it is a giveaway. The bellhousing pattern is GM small, so there are a zillion gearboxes that will bolt up, and you can easily do the same for clutch and flywheel.
If you want to go inline 5 or 6 (and who wouldn't), there are Toyota diesels in Landcruisers that were (are) sold as mine trucks all over North America. Try Alexander's Auto Ranch in Flin Flon, MB, they wreck them from HBM&SCo. There are different Toyota gearboxes to fit that bellhousing if you don't like the mine truck ratios. Check out the M-B enthusiasts for what will bolt up to the 5 and 6 cyl Mercedes engines - you might get a happy surprise.
The rarest of the rare (and nicest of the lot) are the 4.0 litre inline six Mistubishi engines that came in Dodge pickups in '78 and '79s.
