             Congratulations!
Another 1/4 Meg Mileage Milestone is achieved on an '86 Golf NA.
     I have the same car w/ 450k but w/ a list of crippling repairs,
injector pump @ 350k (used),
radiator         @ 360k (new) ,
alternator       @ 375k (used),
glow plug       @ 389k, (new), GP #?? the easy one,
water pump    @ 420k (new),
injector pump @ 450k (rebuilt).  
   The repairs were necessities and do not include typical maintenance
i.e. brakes, shocks, exhaust, oh yeah, windshield @ 319k miles.
Compression test reveals cylinders approx. @ 210-220 lbs each.
Vdub man says this is about half the original pressure.
Still, I get your mileage, even 50 mpg on the interstate.
Will puff on a cold morning start but clear when warmed,
WOT I see smoke at night in the mirror.
      Only you know the state of the peripherals on your present engine.
You may consider new parts for those hard to access areas, like H2O pump,
glowplugs, clutch, and ~!@#$%^&* VW hose clamps.
I couldn't stand it if I had another rebuilt engine waiting to replace the 
old.
Why wait? Replace the old one, you can always put it back in if you wish.
