[Vwdiesel] no reverse

Okay, according to one post I saw, I can adjust the shifter from the
driverside of the transmission. I found the bar that goes into the tranny
for the shifter, but the throwbar that actually connects to that is a solid
steel piece, so I cannot adjust it.
What should I do here?
I was thinking buy an adjustable metal bar and throw it in there, but I
don't want something that may shift position on me at a later date.

Oh and what seemed to cause this debacle:
We had the starter off, and the bolts for the starter actually hold the
tranny and engine to the front engine mount. This caused the engine/tranny
to shift position just a bit, then when we remounted it, POOF, no more
reverse :(
