[Vwdiesel] Exhaust-How much is too much?

A 3 inch exhaust isn't overkill if it can fit under the car with no
problems. There are several 1.6L TD's running around on the GTD forum with
that size and the cars run great. I went with the 2.5" due to clearance
issues on my 91 Jetta TD

My Dad's '96 Passat TDI's exhaust flex joint (right in
front of the cat) has a large hole and sometimes fumes
get in. Since the rest of the system is in great
shape, it seems like the only excuse in a long time to
upgrade it to larger pipes.
It is amazing to me how much that turbo quiets things
down, with the car sitting there running (or going
down the highway) you'd never guess that there is a
huge hole in the exhaust.
So, we're thinking about having the whole system
replaced with just pipe (probably keeping a cat) when
the flex part is replaced.
It appears to have 2 inch pipe currently. I know the
list discussed 2.5 inch as being a huge improvement,
but what about 3 inch? Or is that simply past the
point of diminishing returns for the added cost?
Thanks for your thoughts,
David
