[Vwdiesel] Air in fuel lines

I had the sender/pickup out when I was replacing the
two rubber lines that connect it to the fuel lines up
to the front.

Again, if I was just going to replace the whole thing,
what would potentially happen if I eleminated the
check valves? At that point, it would be set up
essentially the same as my convertible's tank. That
car has no check valves and is fine. Why does the
Passat need them?

My main suspects would be either the plastic fuel line
itself, or the plastic check valves. I suppose that
after 200,000 miles, one couldnt' be too surprised if
the plastic cracked.

Maybe I could plug the line from one end or the other
and pressureize it. This would (hopefully) force fuel
out of the crack or pinhole that is allowing air in.
As I said, that would make finding it a hell of a lot
easier.
