Hmm, very interesting...

Indeed a possibility, I have a tired old Nissan pickup truck that would
be much improved if it turns out that the engine is reusable

I saw one once, years ago, it was for sale for $100, had been sitting
for years, at the time I needed a running car so didn't consider buying
it. Also saw a real cheap turbo-ed dasher once, didn't get it cause I
didn't know anything about turbos except that they're expensive if they
need replacing. I'm afraid those days (of cheap diesels) are probably
gone, people just tag on "bio-diesel ready" to the ad and automatically
add a couple hundred on to the price any more...

I haven't been to an actual auto wrecking yard looking for parts yet - I
just have a feeling that, around here anyway (western NC), the prices
for anything off of one of them would be ridiculously expensive, no
matter what it is.

Thanks Brian, and everybody else who responded. Guess I'll have to
either round up enough parts to try to get this thing started or
disassemble it some and see how it looks inside. Its missing the
oil-pan, the starter, the oil filter apparatus, the water pump and
housing - guess I really need to get another VW-diesel parts donor
vehicle if I'm going to have a chance at getting it started for a
reasonable cost.
