Calcium Carbide lamp is what my Grandfather used in the coal mines of Pa. I
also have a "Big Bang" cannon that uses that stuff, It can be really loud.
Like Roger said, it does produce a nasty slim on the bottom of the water
tank.

I agree with the others Calcium Carbide is the rock that miners lamps used.
Water power? That's the Meyer myth. If only we could utilise the extra
oxygen in the air and add it to the split water... H2 O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide)
is higher up the reactivity levels and But unfortunately so is the energy to
create it. Maybe electrolysis of scrap aluminium (drinks cans maybe) to
create hydrogen would work. Stirling Hot air engines may interest you. NASA
love them for their solar journeys.
Anyone ever rebuilt a torn off Quantum wing mirror? Took me several hours of
toying with this Chinese puzzle; but I did it :o)
