  No, the pump can stay on but you save a lot of skin by removing 
the injector lines.  Do the pump end first then the injector end.  It 
keeps diesel from running all over your hands if done in that order.  :-)
Putting the nuts back on is the tricky part (use a magnet when removing) 
just slide them on a wire or small screwdriver, put the end on the end of 
the gp and then let it go, reach down and spin it on. 
  I just use a simple, 12v test light for almost all my diagnosing unless 
it requires checking V drop or draw and even then I check most battery 
drains with a test light.  Cheap, quick and simple.
  You only have to disconnect 3 of the glow plugs to test them all.  
If you have NO smoke, (white) while cranking (several seconds of 
cranking is required) then you have no fuel and you might want to 
check the fuel stop solenoid for power and operation and that the pump 
is indeed getting fuel.  Watch for them bubbles!
