While this has not happened to me personally, it has to 2 persons I do a bit
of wrenching for, on the road.
The wire is flimsy, and salt corossion eats it away.

I do a lot of country running (in fact at my age, I avoid cities) and carry
an amazing assorrtment of stuff in the trunk of the jetta, especially in winter.

A BIG flashlight, (square battery type)
Taillight bulb with a long wire and a cigarette lighter plug on the end
Assortment of hand tools
Wire, And dont forget wire coathangers, several, for tying up loose
machinery that falls off the bottom of the car.

I recently saw and bought a neat 12 volt motorized scissors jack, quite
chunky, in its own plastic carrying case. Already used it on the wife's
chevy, tying up her muffler with coathanger wire.

In winter, BEST snow tires all around, tow chains, one of those hand lever
winches, (they will actually lift the car off the ground, [dont ask!])

I really love the 4 exposed lifting rings on the 87, they wimped out on
later models.

Might be a good idea. Which would you rather have on the freeway, sudden
engine power loss, or sudden flames from under the dash?..Or both!

I've had one fire in goldie, caused by stupidity installing a ham radio set
without a fuse.

Those fuzzy black floormats sustain combustion really well. Was able to
pull over and beat it out with arolled up newspaper... On a freeway would
have been lucky to get out and let her burn. It was very fast, and terrible
chocking smoke.

(Memo,...add a fire extinguisher accessible from driver's seat)
