[Vwdiesel] Water Pump

On my then fairly new to me Corrado on a trip about
four years ago, we were headed to the Grand Canyon to
camp. 

In the drive through at a Jack in the Box right before
we turned north on I-40, we suddenly got a horrific
squealing noise and smoking belt.

Pushed the car to a hotel where we stayed the night. 
(Sympathetic desk clerk gave us a good deal.)

Next day, I discovered the water pump had locked up! 
I was able to free it up by rotating it backwards.

Aparantly, the bearings in the pump went very bad, the
pulley had probably a half inch of play!

Anyway, with a loose belt (bypassing the power
steering pump) we made it back to Kansas with this
terribly noisy water pump, and I drove the car for a
week before  replacing it.

My theory is that the belt was too tight (previous
owner) and that killed the bearings.

It made all kinds of horrible grumbling noises, but
never leaked a drop.

Crazy thing about the story is that we were headed
home to Manhattan Kansas from Los Angeles.  It just so
happened that the truck we parked the car next to
belonged to two Kansas State Universtiy students from
California who were also heading back to Manhattan
from Spring Break!  They recognized a radio station
sticker in my window and drove me to the auto parts
store for the new belt!  Small world.
