[Vwdiesel] pressing front wheel bearings

I spoke to Gary. When he did my front bearing, he tried to knock the bearing 
out by the inner race. It knocked out but the outer was stuck. He used a 
torch and gently made a vertical score. It basically just cracked by it 
self. He then used an air chisel with a brass rod to drive it out.

He has also used a slide hammer with a round plate cut to a few thousand 
over the inner race and heated the knuckle and knocked the bearing out. (If 
your lucky) :-)

He then used the threaded rod to pull the bearing back in.

I think it cost me around $120 to replace both bearing and the clips.

He also mentioned that is's worth it to go with VW bearings. He said they 
seem to have tighter specs. IE: The jobbers can be harder to get in and out.

P.S> I need to replace either the front or both engine mounts. It's rocking, 
  and thudding mostly on acceleration but also slightly on deaccelration.  
Our laneway is on a hill, we need to stop in the middle of it and open the 
garage door. I think that might have caused them to finally collapse.
