[Vwdiesel] OT, problem with a different diesel engine

No smoke associated with the bad injector whatsoever. It clacked something
fierce, made it's presence known very well when the injector was doing it's
thing, a huge loping miss at idle.... Very noticeable at idle, sounded like
a bad valve adjustment without the clatter of a loose valve.

It would start to make noise and make the idle shitty only every once in a
while (when the injector did it's "I'm dieing!" thing). I tried a big dose
of stanadyne, which has worked to some extent in the past on other stuff,
but to no avail.

I have left the fuel tank cap off after filling the tank on the combine
exactly once. That was very entertaining.
I learned a lot about plugged fuel filters that day.....
The filter was plugged so bad, the filter would make noises like my kids
after a slurpee if you spun it loose once the engine stopped. The smoke was
incredible... you could cut it up for cordwood but the thing was, there was
no fuel there to make the smoke with.... it had to do with lack of internal
pump pressure and the timing advance with no pump internal pressure to
control it with.

Plugged filters usually cause smoke at the tailpipe, as a rule.

James, did you get any smoke with that intermittant
injector? Did it make noise? (And do you think that
it could/would only happen after a long time of
driving? Mine won't unless it has been driven at
least an hour.)

I have never noticed much smoke behind 45, though when
a car is right behind me (with headlights on) and I am
trying to go full bore up a hill there will be a
little smoke visible in the headlights. I've never
seen any during the daytime. So, maybe the filter is
okay after all.

Hmmm...
