[Vwdiesel] injector pump leaks

It can be done, but it is certainly not much more to have the pump on the
bench. You already pulled the sprocket to get this far, and a few more
bolts has the thing on the bench, and really, that is preferred- you can see
better, and evaluate the bushing wear then easier.
Have a look at this soon Doug, as the leaking fuel can get on the belt and
destroy it with annoying consequences.

One thing to note, there have been a lot of leaking input shaft seals lately
it seems.
Tight belts kill the bushing, and then it leaks. Not that mine is any
special car, but I worked on my old Jetta the other day (currently under new
ownership) and the IP is still fine at 580000+ kms. The belt has never been
tight, in fact, I bet many would look at it with a cold engine, and say it
was too loose.
The belt should be able to slide back and forth on the injection pump
sprocket with very moderate effort. To say, an 8 year old should be able to
just move it sideways on the sprocket grooves. Any tighter, and the pump
wears. If you hear a whine from the belt area, it's waaaaay too tight.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] injector pump leaks

How many places can the injector pump leak? I'm getting a wet garage floor
with a fuel leak from the front of the engine. I've replaced the return hose
and everything topside looks dry. I suspect the shaft seal. How difficult is
a shaft seal replacement with the pump still mounted to the engine. Any
other places to look for leaks?
