[Vwdiesel] Diesel Prices

True, but in most jurisdictions, if you calculate the road tax being paid by
a trucker on a per mile basis, it's a pretty significant toll to use that
mile.
It should serve to highlight not that they need to pay more, but just how
badly the motorist is being screwed on a per mile basis.

I agree that big trucks damage roads more, but the piper is being paid,
believe me. thing is, the piper toodles off to the bar at the end of the
day and tosses the money around like a drunken sailor. (No offense to the
navy guys) :-) then when it comes to road maintenance, just enough is done
to get by.

One thing of interest I know of.
In Saskatchewan, there is a potash mine in Esterhazy SK that wanted to truck
the product to a shipping point just over the Canada/US border. Local rail
freight was exorbitant, and it was more economic to truck it the 3 hours to
the border, to get the potash to a point where there was competition for
freight. The highway had to be upgraded to allow this volume and overweight
truck traffic, and they ran loads. Really heavy A trains, with no weight
limits. IMC ran the mine at the time, and they paid for the road
construction, so that a layer of top quality pavement was laid down 10"
thick. That road has been good since the early 70's with absolutely stupid
weights being hauled on it, with virtually no maintenance... why? because
they built it properly, not just skinned it with 2" of pavement that is
designed to last ten years. So, what am I saying? If the road is built
poorly, it will be damaged by trucks, yes. If more than a tiny fraction of
the road tax collected went into the road, there would be a road that would
not damage as easily, and last for years irregardless of frost, traffic,
whatever, and in the long run, be more economical.
sorry to ramble on so....

Hi James,

While the big trucks do use more fuel, the amount of road damage they cause
is MUCH more than the amount of fuel that they use. They use about 4 to 10
times the fuel of a diesel pickup truck per mile but cause more than 20
times the road damage.
