Yeah, I'd be interested if it was significantly
cheaper than the newer style pumps, which basically
have the feature you are looking for.  (Though aren't
cheap to buy.)

Now, I do remember someone mentioning using some sort
of pull-solenoid powered by a switch on the dash.  My
plan was to find a VW switch (such as a second
defroster switch) to power the solenoid.

Unfortunately, I never did find a sufficient pull
solenoid.  Some of our school busses have one, but the
head mechanic told me that they were NLA.  (They are
used to pop open the front door if you accidently shut
it.)

Anyone have a source for some sort of pull-solenoid? 
Even having one controlled manually (no cold start
switch) would be better than nothing, which is what I
have now!
