[Vwdiesel] Parts interchange?

I thought I read in some SAE report from the period that the internals
were modular, as you suggest. maybe at roger's site? I do know that
the bellhousing bolt patterns on the VW four is not compatible with
that of the Audi 5 and 6-cylinder engines (as used in Volvos).
