Hey Ken-
I purchased three tensioners at the same time, two
were the right kind, and the other was made by a
different manufacturer and had the same problem you
had. I ended up deciding not to do that third timing
belt and just returned both after the parts shop
decided they couldn't find a new one that fit right.
Anyway, the stud that the tensioner sits "on" can be
removed from the block. I remember the first timing
belt I did I ended up not changing the tensioner
because I couldn't get it off. Come to think of it,
that one is probably still around...
If it is tight, use some vice grips, but that stud
will unscrew from the block so you can easily pull the
tensioner off. One engine I worked on even had some
anti-seize on it to make the stud removal easier.
