[Vwdiesel] removing crank bolt

You are not going to like this but for me to be able to tighten my crank
bolt to the proper specs, I had to remove the oil pan and block the crank
with a piece of 2x4. After it was all said and done I really don't think no
amount of brakes applied while in 3rd gear could have held what it took to
get mine torqued to spec and then having to turn it another half a turn
after the initial torque. This is on a 91 Jetta TD. Not sure if it is the
same on yours. That way I didn't have to worry about breaking anything in
the drive trane. Put a nice indentation in that 2x4 too.

How do you hold the crank to remove and then replace the crank bolt?
It's on a 85 Jetta 1.6na.
