[Vwdiesel] VE Injection pump diagnostic question

Was installing a replacement pump and as the sprocket was being put on, I 
noticed movement along the axis of the shaft, you can push on the gear and 
get movement. Is this the sign that the bushing is shot?
Also, got a great tip on how to remove the shaft seal? I tried to tap it 
toward the center to get it started and the seal casing is gradually 
shredding on me, with no indication that it is coming out.

I know that the depth of the seal is about 1/4 inch as is the with of the 
seal. Steel and aluminum cohabitation is a !@#$%.
