[Vwdiesel] TDI immobilizer

Since I'm planning to drive from Dallas to Atlanta in a few days, the 
car is balking.  I started it today and it stalled immediately.  "Weird" 
thinks I.  Then it did it again.  I fired up the VAG-COM and I got the 
immobilizer code (17978) and key voltage too low (01176), both 
intermittent.  It's the original key I got with the car, but when I read 
that, it's definitely what happens when the immobilizer is activated.  
It started after that and is starting with varying success since. 

I seached the Bently CD and did a lot of poking around in the archives 
of TDIclub.com and the VWVortex and got as much as maybe a bad contact 
with the coil that picks up the signal from the chip in the key, but if 
that's the case, or even where that connection is and got zippo.  Anyone 
played that game before?  The '85 isn't up to the trip and I don't want 
to have to rent a car to drive all that way.  It wouldn't be a Diesel.
