[Vwdiesel] running out of oil

I recently swapped a 91 ecodiesel motor into my 82 westfalia vanagon.
Things were going well until the passenger side motor mount bolts
loosened and snapped. This poked a hole in the oil filter while I was
going up a hill on the highway. I shut the engine off as soon as I
could, after the oil light flickered several times. I watched the
coolant temp the whole time, and it didn't go over the halfway mark.
After installing a new oil filter and filling with oil, I started it
up. It runs, but blows white smoke and makes a loud pinging or rapping
noise.
I removed the engine from the van. A quick look unde rthe valve cover
and things look fine. Oil and coolant did not mix, and there are no
cracks or leaking from head hasket that I see. Could I just bent some
valves? What should I inspect or replace? The ease of starting suggest
the compression is still good. What tends to go first when oil runs
out? I have access to an 89 non-turbo diesel motor, but would rather
try and resurect this one if possible. Up until now it was in excellent
condition and
started perfectly 1st turn with no smoke. thanks in advance for any input,
Ken
