I was experiencing surging when starting in 1st gear, and sometimes in 2nd
gear. Thanks to folks on the list, it was suggested that the pump was
loose. And, loose it was: the bolt was missing from the IP mounting
bracket where it attaches to the alternator braket. I installed a new
bolt, and the problem was solved.

This actually solved two mysteries: the surge problem, and where the bolt
came from that siezed my intermediate shaft pulley. Folks might remember
me being "stranded" in San Fran. due to this.
