I've been sporadically messing with my overheating TDI and today I gave
it a test drive. When the temp. gauge is high and there's no heat, I'll
take that as a bad sign. So, I drove it carefully, and in intervals,
back to the house and pulled the thermostat. A bit of advice from the
TDIclub.com site indicated that you can test the water pump by pulling
the thermostat out and trying to spin the impeller by hand. Sure
enough, it turned several degrees. It locked after that, but I still
have to replace it. This really ticks me off becase I replaced it with
the timing belt. 9000 miles ago. And, of course, I'll have to pull
half the same stuff off again to replace the pump. It's a good car when
it's running, but that's just not been very often. I'm starting to get
termianlly ticked off. I also have to hope now that the overheating
that I'd hoped was a figment of the computer's imagination didn't tear
up the engine, crack the head, blow the gasket, etc.
I'm still driving the old '85, but the starter selenoid is starting to
go out among other things. After that, I'm going to be riding my bike
20 miles down I-30 to work. I.e., I'll be missing work.
