I've found that a cheap stethescope is a valuable tool for isolating extranious sounds in an engine. you can really 
get it narrowed down to a very specific area. You can either use it as is, or get a piece of 1/8 steel line and attach it 
to it. The cost of a cheap "steth" is about $10 at most drug stores, alot cheaper than the same thing you can get 
from a speed shop or snap on.
