[Vwdiesel] Makes blue smoke when first starting engine in morning. Why?

Sherwin,
      I have the same/like symptom w/ '86 1.6L NA Golf.
This problem is much worse in colder temps. 
I find that by pulling the choke/advance out even in 
warm temp weather the smoke is reduced considerable
to no smoke at all. 
Once engine is warm, no more smoke, restore choke/advance to OFF.
I'll catch hell for using the phrase choke/advance, just so you understand.
Clearly, advancing the timing cleans up the smoke issue.
Why? Because the engine is cold. 
You can adjust the timing and injector pump very finely w/ good results.
I just stick w/ using the Choke/Advance control.
