[Vwdiesel] front end noise

I've done everything I can think of for the strut on the riders side but I
still get "klunking" noises out of the riders side on rough pavement. I've
decided to try looking in other places. First, I want to try the wheel
bearing. I've searched the Bentley and the Haynes and they don't give much
for diagnosing problems. I seem to remember that jacking the Caddy up and
trying to rock the tire in the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position will tell
if the wheel bearing is shot (i.e., if there's movement the wheel bearing is
bad). Rocking side to side (3 o'clock & 9 o'clock) is supposed to tell the
condition of the tie rod end. Is this correct? There doesn't seem to be any
problem with the steering other than it could probably use an alignment
(drifts to the ditch when I let go of the wheel).
