I messed with the tensioner on the TDI and the singing went mostly 
away.  I guess it was just a hair loose and it was making noise as it 
came off the cam pulley as determined by stethoscope.  Still makes a 
little bit of noise, but the tab is squarely in the notch.  Tonight, I 
drove it around the block for the first time.  No problems outside of a 
glowplug code.  Considering my record on these things, I'll ease it back 
into circulation.  Tomorrow night, I'll drive it around again.  Maybe 
Thursday, I'll drive it the 15 miles to work if I'm feeling brave. 

Major lesson out of this experience is don't use the water pump with the 
plastic impeller.  In scanning Fred's TDI forum, I'm not the only one to 
find that out.  It's under too much stuff to replace on a whim.  If I'd 
left the old water pump in when I'd changed the timing belt, I'd not 
have had the last round of flustration.
