[Vwdiesel] Need Help Timing a Fuel Injector Pump

I own a 1989 Jetta Diesel and recently replaced the O-rings on the pump
myself as I cannot afford to have the pump rebuilt proffessionally and it
was leaking diesel out of the cold start lever and the fuel injector plate.

Now the car runs, but it smokes and is recieving too much fuel, the manual I
have does not describe how to time the injector so I'm in the dark.
What I'm specifically trying to find out is which way do you turn the
injector to retard the timing or advance it?
