My son's 91 jetta, acquired for a very low price, had been butchered by a
non -VW shadetree mechanic.
It was running, but among other things, like an oil leak in to the coolant,
(not blown), timing WAY off (advanced), I discovered the flywheel was
indexed about 60 degrees off.
Not wanting to do a complete tear-down right now, I found TDC (+/-) by
rocking the engine for a while, and painted a mark on the FW. re-timed the
pump by ear, and it now runs fine, but I still have to change the head
gasket to stop the oil leak.
Want to bet I find the rubber insert missing?

I'm told that , if the FW needs to be re-faced, the machinist will remove
the pins to make the lathe work safer/easier, and probably not replace them.

I wil not learn this until/unless I have to split the tranny off, and since
the clutch is just fine, I don't plan to do it any time soon.

Sandy
