While you might be able to get away with minimal/no problems with a
low cost "S" oil, I wouldn't recommend it.  IMHO, there is no reason
to. If you are going to go low cost, you can find low cost "C" rated
oils at Wal-Mart, Farm and Fleet, etc.  Personally, I wouldn't use 
the cheapest oils available for my cars, regardless of whether they 
are "S" or "C".  But cheap "C" oils do exist.  The only time I might 
put an "S" oil in my diesel is in an emergency (perhaps if I was on
the road and the car was low on oil and I couldn't find anything but
an "S" oil.)
