[Vwdiesel] 150000 milestone

FWIW, here is how I do it:
I also let my oil sit and settle out, although at
least part of that is because of the time factor...
Anyway, I built my filtering system out of two 30
gallon drums. One sits on its side on a shelf, with
one opening facing up and one opening down. Oil gets
dumped into the first opening, then drains out the
lower opening through a farm-style fuel filter. Then
it flows through there to the other 30 gallon drum
where it is stored until I want to use it. I have a
hand crank pump in the second opening on the second
drum.
As I said, I let the oil sit for at least a few days
before pouring it into the first drum. As I do that,
I pour it through a screen to help keep the big chunks
from going in. Then, I let it sit in the upper drum
for a couple days to let it settle again. I've got a
on/off valve to stop the flow. (There is about 2
inches of the barrel's capacity that can't drain out,
so the particles collect there. I clean it out
periodically.)
When I'm ready to use the oil, I pump it out into a
gas can and dump it into the tank. I don't do it very
scientifically really, just look at the fuel gauge and
decide what percentage oil I want to burn (based on
temperature) and dump approximately the appropriate
amount of oil in the tank. Then I drive over to the
local fuel supplier and top off the tank with diesel.
To keep from having to change out expensive VW fuel
filters, I have a cheap in-line fuel filter to catch
any stray particles. I also keep a spare in the
trunk, but have never had to use it.
