[Vwdiesel] Smoke on Acceleration

Got the '81 1.6na Caddy running today, and upon hard acceleration notice a 
good bit of smoke out the tailpipe.  I only got a few glimpses of it because 
it was dark out and the car behind me lights illuminated it.  Therefore I 
can't tell if it is black, blue, or white.

ASSUMING it isn't oil, and is an IP issue, is the pump advanced too much or 
retarded?
