Is it possible that the car was originally Canadian?
The Canadian cars had an infernal daylight running lights modification, that
almost always gave problems.
Starting with 1990, I think.
I've had to bypass the "feature" in my 93 because it set fire to the
headlight switch.
In the A2, starting with 1990, under the hood, below the coolant reservoir,
attached to the bracket that mounts the reservoir to the shock tower, there
is a single wire with a yellow connector, plugged in to a receiving yellow
socket. If this is unplugged, the daytime running lights disapear.
I think when daytimes are on, (engine running) the tail lights are not,
until the light switch is activated.
In Nicks case, since wiggling th light switch solves the problem, I suspect
it is indeed the switch.
