Having owned at one time, a '86 MB 190D...

The MB autotranny is a pretty robust piece of equipment... provided it 
is tinkered on a continual basis.

Black fluid means destroyed bands and/or clutches. Changing the fluid is 
one thing, but if the bands are gone, well...
