That's pretty much how I do mine.  I usually scribe or file a mark and 
put it back the same way when done.  One time I had replaced something 
up front and then had it "aligned" at a shop.  When it came back I found 
my scribe marks were still nicely aligned (just like before I took it 
into the shop) and I got a detailed printout of how far out it was 
before and how good the alignment was afterwards :)
