[Vwdiesel] More Dasher?

Drove my Dasher over to an airconditioner specialist to work on it but he was too busy. Did several errands, no problem starting. Parked it outside this afternoon & it wouldn't start. I suspect something is wacky with the timer & the glow plugs don't stay on long enough. So this evening I installed a solenoid & starter button to bypass the timer & manually apply 12 volts directly from the battery to the glow plugs. In driving around today, the car seemed to have plenty of pep. Will try my glow plug override tomorrow & let you how it works. Is there a maximum time I should manually apply voltage to the glow plugs with out hurting them? These are the fast type glow plugs & are new.
