  I was able to pick up a "toast" head for free from a local shop
a few years back.  Knew I could find one after hearing his 
statement that "The VW 1.5 diesel is flawed.  EVERY one of 
them they ever tried to re-ring ended up cracking the block 
at the bolt holes!"  Gee, someone didn't know how to properly 
do a VW diesel head did they?  Anyway, knew they'd probaby 
have one from an engine they killed and sure enough.
  Most shops don't want anything to do with a cracked head.  
Most ARE toast.  Most VW diesel heads however, are just fine 
and just won't crack again!  :-)
