Just got my copy of the January 2008 Popular Mechanics. On page 70 is an article you might like to read, "The Case for Diesel".The author talks about a pre production VW Jetta TDI. Said he was getting almost 50 MPG while exceeding the speed limit. He also compares a Prius with a Polo TDI which gets 74.3 MPG against the Prius' 54 MPG. He also notes we can't get the Polo in our "so called free country", the USA. The article also notes the introduction dates for the following diesel introduction dates to the USA. 2008: Audi A-4 sedan with a 3.0 L V-6, BMW 3 5,& 6 series, :2009: Cadillac CTS sedan with 2.9 L TDI V-6, Ford F-150 pickup with a 4.4 L V-8 derived from 3.6 L Euro-spec Land Rover diesel, Honda Accord with a 2.2 L i-DTEC (what ever that means). 2010 Saturn Aura, engine to be determined.
