I've had it happen once on a Rabbit I bought, resurrected
and sold. It'd been running really poorly obviously and had
a lot of soot in the tailpipe, on the pistons and also had a
glass pack coming apart. I put a head on it, got it running
and proceeded to start driving it around. It was sluggish but
got faster and faster. As it started winding up more and more,
it'd throw out a batch of sparks and occasionally some
fiberglass!
Sounds like you're a bit carboned up and as you wound it out,
you got the carbon all glow-ey and spit it out. Sounds like you
need to get on it a little more often. :-)
