[Vwdiesel] Why so noisy?

I was at a farm show here in Wisconsin 2-3 years ago and a diesel service
outfit had a display set up running just a diesel injector pump connected to
the injectors - I think it was off a 4 cylinder deere engine - with an
electric motor turning the pump and the injectors pointed into an aquarium.
The display was set up to show injector spray pattern.

What stood out to me about the display was that almost all of the clattering
noise that we hear from diesel engines was present from just the injection
system being turned without any combustion.
