[Vwdiesel] '81 Rabbit questions

I have never had real what you could call "heat" from a VW diesel.
If the cooling system is good, and engine in a good state of tune, the 
heater core is sufficient below -20 to keep the motor cool, regardless 
of load. This is on everything from 82 Jetta 1.6 to 89 td, to 99 jetta 
tdi, 97 Passat tdi...

They don't make enough heat to overpower the cold air moving through the 
heater core... that's when it's really cold, and all of the rad core 
except the top 2" is covered with cardboard tight to the core.
Pull in off the highway, with the motor at normal operating temp, and 
heater at full, the temp gauge drops like a stone.  Reminds me of 
driving an aircooled, slow down, the heat more or less stops.  It's 
freaky.  The large volume of unthrottled air passing through the engine 
can't help either...
