[Vwdiesel] Future Outlook

Hi Stephen;
If I were you I would start looking for a used tranny. VW trannys
aren't very prone to failure and it shouldn't be hard to find a good used
one or too hard to change one. It is a little dicey to do without removing
the engine but entirely possible. I would also change at least the clutch
disc at the same time. I have Rabbit pickups and Dasher station wagons and
intend to keep them running until I don't drive any more. I'm 68 now and
hope to drive for 20 more years. I will be going from Chehalis WA to Texas
the first week in January in my 1981 Dasher Diesel wagon and the next
weekend from Chehalis WA to Stockton in my 1981 VW Rabbit gas pickup. Not
enough Room in the Dasher for what I'm taking to CA. The Dasher diesel gets
50 mpg and the gas Rabbit pickup 30+ so with today's fuel prices they are
both pretty decent. My 1981 Rabbit diesel pickup is off line right now while
I'm building a 1.5 diesel which I will turbo and install a two tank WVO
system in the truck.
Brian

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Future Outlook

I recently wrote about a popping that occurs when coming from a stand still
to speeding up in first, and from the responses of most of the list it has
been determined that the differential is failing, causing is to make a
grinding noise in first gear when driving uphill or when starting from 1st
fast (it does not occur in 3-4-5 gears, and only occassionally in 2nd gear)

How long will the differential last without replacement? I have a steady
well paying job and am determind to keep my 1989 Jetta Diesel alive no
matter what.
