The ME code engine block appears in my 2/86 edition of the VW/Audi engine
code book as being in a Golf from 07/84 and a Jetta from 08/84. My friend
Harvey Nelson who was a service writer for a NW dearlership during the
Rabbit and early Golf years has told me that the starting letters in the VW
part numbers are coded to where the part was first used Type 1, 2, 3, 4,
Rabbit , Audi etc. I basically treat all early pumps the same. Set the pump
timing for the rig, set the idle speed according to Bentley very carefully,
set the max speed stop and then run it. The idle speed messes with fuel
delivery so set it carefully as close to the correct RPM as possible. After
it is running and you have set those three things if you don't have enough
power increase the max fuel screw a little bit at a time till you get too
much smoke then back it off till you reduce smoke to the point you can live
with it. You should now have 50+ raging draft horses
