  If you'd had the owner's manual you wouldn't most likely be 
praising it either.  ;-)
  Your blinking light comes on for two occasions that I can think
of.  Low coolant or "in the red" temp.  Since you seem to have 
neither, pull the sensor out of the top of the coolant reservoir and 
clean the probes well.
  If your amber, glow plug light starts blinking then you have 
water in the water seperator (or a bad ground or a bad glow 
plug relay or temp sensor...)  ;-D

  No real consequences other than possibly a little less 
performance and/or mileage.  The only difference is the 
shims so yes, they can be re-shimmed to TD specs.
