  AFIK the issue was a bad batch of cores rather than the 
basic design itself.  
  Dad's pu had a bad cap, never opened.  Blew two reserviors
before I caught it.  First one seperated at the seam so I just 
thought it bad and replaced it.  Second one split.  Old one 
was split but they tend to do that when they get old.  Checked 
the cap and woah!  No other leaks or problems!  Whew!
